Kicking Off Kicks4Kids 2015 on the Riviera Maya

On Tuesday November 10, the membership of Rotary Club of Playa del Carmen Seaside received a generous donation of new sneakers, officially kicking off the annual Kicks4Kids shoe drive for the 2015 holiday season. Kicks4Kids is a charitable initiative that collects new sneakers and distributes them to disadvantaged children living on the Riviera Maya.

kicks4kids-playa-del-carmenClub President Renato Lopez and Secretary Michele Kinnon accepted the donation from Bob Hyde and Patricia Youngstrum who presented the shoes on behalf of Rotary Club of Vero Beach Sunrise. Bob and Trish are two of the founding members of Playa Seaside Rotary and Bob is a past-President. Both had been involved with Kicks4Kids during their time in Playa del Carmen and recently introduced the project to the membership at their new club after relocating to Vero Beach Florida. Sunrise President Louis “Buck” Vocelle and Secretary Debbie Avery organized a drive within the membership to collect forty-three pairs of new sneakers that Bob and Trish carefully packed and transported to Playa del Carmen.

kicks4kids-playa-del-carmenSince we started Kicks4Kids in 2013, we have been able to put new sneakers on the feet of over a thousand underprivileged children living in very distressed conditions. I was doing this essentially on my own, out of my home, with the help of a few friends.” Explained Kicks4Kids founder and owner of BuyPlaya Real Estate Advisors Michele Kinnon, “This year, with the support of Seaside Rotary and Rotary friends from around the world, I think we are going to be able to expand the program exponentially and bring sneakers to a lot more children who need them. This contribution from RC Vero Beach Sunrise is a great start!”

Kicks4Kids is a year-round project but the holiday season is when most donations are collected. The shoes are then sorted, sized and distributed to needy children in outlying villages between Christmas and Three Kings Day.

Anyone wishing to participate in Kicks4Kids is asked to bring new sneakers to any one of the Kicks4Kids collection centers in Playa del Carmen. Shoes will be accepted at Wah Wah Beach Bar on the beach at Calle 2, Don Chendo Restaurant on Avenue 30 between Calles 24 and 26 and the BRIC Hotel on Calle 28 between Avenues 5 and 10. Sizes most needed are children’s size 3 – Adult size 7.

Corporate sponsors cover all operating costs but monetary contributions are also welcomed and accepted through the Seaside Rotary Paypal account. Email for more information.
