Today, thanks to the coordinated efforts of Seaside Rotary, Playa del Carmen Rotary Club and Rotaract, Kicks4Kids brought almost 300 pairs of new sneakers to the children living in the remote village of Nuevo Noh Bec. It was a long and at times emotional day but you wouldn’t know it looking at the big smiles on all those little faces.

thumb_DSC_7585_1024The day began early with fun activities planned for the all the children in the village. Energetic Damas Rotarianas got all the kids up and dancing and singing as Playa del Carmen Rotarians and Rotaract members organized the gifts, hung piñatas and played soccer with some of the older boys. The event took place on the grounds of the Nuevo Noh Bec primary school and each of the classrooms was repurposed for the day. One classroom offered workshops on healthy eating habits and nutrition, another offered free medical consultations and treatment. One classroom became a makeshift kitchen serving up delicious tacos to all the guests and another was set aside for Kicks4Kids. The line stretched from the door well into the courtyard as parents and children lined-up for their turn to try on the brightly colored sneakers until they found the pair that fit just right.

thumb_DSC_7588_1024This is the first delivery of the holiday season for Kicks4Kids. These shoes came primarily from donations from Bob Hyde and Trish Youngstrum and their fellow Rotary members at RC Vero Beach Florida, the players, parents and coaches from the Cancun Challenge and personal donations from Seaside Rotary members. Seaside Rotarians also collected dozens of colorful, new soccer balls for the kids to play with!

The event was extremely well-planned and organized and we were proud to be a part of it. The Kicks4Kids committee members, Lydia and John Marty, Michele Kinnon, Sharon Montoya-Welsh, Catherine Nash and Michelle Marino-Kramer would like to thank our friends at the Rotary Club and Rotaract Club of Playa del Carmen and all of the wonderful volunteers who came out so early on a Sunday morning to bring a bit of Christmas cheer to this remote settlement.  Of course, many thanks to each and every person who contributed sneakers or funds to help us “Help Playa’s Kids”.

Our big collection time is just beginning as snowbirds and vacationers flock to the warmth of the Riviera Maya! I hope this inspires you to tuck an extra pair of new sneakers (or maybe more than one pair) into your luggage before you depart. Sneaker donations can be dropped off at Wah Wah Beach Bar (on the beach at Calle 2), Don Chendo Restaurant (Av. 30 between Calles 24 & 26) and the BRIC Hotel (Calle 28 between Ave. 5 & 10). Thank you to everyone who has been so generous with us so far!
