First place in the tournament was awarded to the foursome of J.J. Johnston, Marcus Roehmer, Dan Palka and Sergio Rodriguez. David Sanchez, Scot Lyall, Raul Monroy and Dan Petrin followed in second place with Franco Magnifico, Michael Yates, Phil Woodward and Doug Lavallee taking home third place. Without a doubt, the high point of the tournament came from 9-year-old Junior Golfer Alex Rodriguez who amazed us all with a hole-in-one!
Throughout the course, golfers were challenged to several special contests. Luis Rivera took home the prize for the Longest Drive. There were three Closest to the Pin contest winners: Dan Palka, Alex Rodriguez (with his hole-in-one), and Richard Sykes. Richard also won this year’s bid for Straightest Drive. First place in the Putting Contest went to Andrias Lee, followed by Oscar Barrito and Eric Magnifico. Winning players took home a variety of prizes all generously donated by local businesses.
Prior to tournament play, golfers enjoyed delicious breakfast pastries donated by Das Brot and Basic Foodie. On the course, golfers enjoyed complimentary beer provided by Heineken. Following game play, golfers joined Seaside Rotarians and friends for an awards ceremony, luncheon and raffle in Hard Rock Golf Club’s elegant palapa-covered dining room. Lunch was generously provided by popular Playa del Carmen restaurants La Patrona de Playa, El Oasis, Yaxche and Don Chendo with an open bar courtesy of La Fe.
The Seaside Rotary Golf Classic presented by Tequila Barrel is the club’s biggest fundraiser of the year. Proceeds from previous tournaments were used to deliver over $500,000 USD worth of essential medical equipment and supplies from Project C.U.R.E. to the new Red Cross Hospital in Playa del Carmen. Seaside Rotary has also awarded grants to KKiS (Keeping Kids in School), Centro de Atencíon Integral A.C., El Hongo Community Center and Good Intentions. Most recently, the club was able to provide funds to support an innovative therapy program for children at the KODOMO Center for Autism. Proceeds from this year’s event will go toward completing the installation of a clean water system in the community of Cristo Rey. Plans are also in the works to bring over 2 million USD worth of medical equipment and supplies to disadvantaged communities all across southeast Mexico.
In his remarks, Seaside Rotary President, Renato Lopez, praised tournament Chairperson John Marty for his dedication and hard work. Marty credited his committee and thanked Hard Rock Golf Club Director Alaciel Aguilar, Alberto Pique Medina and their staff for their invaluable assistance in making the event a success. He also acknowledged the many local business owners who sponsored the tournament or donated prizes, most notably Title Sponsor Tequila Barrel and Condo-Hotels Playa del Carmen, sponsor of the Seaside Rotary online auction. Major corporate sponsors for this year’s tournament also included BuyPlaya Real Estate Advisors, Bric Hotel & Spa, PG’s Mexican Caribe Bar, Sr. Dan’s Sports Bar and VaporMex. Marty stressed that 100% of the tournament’s net proceeds will go toward charitable programs and initiatives in the community that support Seaside Rotary’s mission: “Helping Playa’s Kids”.
